Our community’s social safety net is under unprecedented strain due to the current government shutdown and the lapse of federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. As you may know, SNAP does not cover essential non-food items like diapers. For the families who rely on SNAP to feed their children, the lapse in their food benefits forces them to make an impossible choice: Do they buy a meal, or do they buy diapers? This impossible decision is creating a public health crisis for infants and toddlers whose parents cannot afford regular changes.
